Intro to Sea Kayaking - All Day Are you a beginner with no sea kayaking experience and no previous formal instruction? If so, this all-day Introduction to Sea Kayaking is the best way to start your weekend. After completing the day, you won’t be a beginner any more! You’ll be ready to enjoy Basic classes, plus Introductory and Beginner tours for the rest of the weekend.
You'll get comfortable in your boat and learn basic skills in this day-long, relaxed-pace class. We'll begin the morning getting used to the way your kayak feels. The idea is to take it slow and easy! No hurry, no pressure—just a fun and easy way to begin.
After getting comfortable in your boat, it's time to learn a wet exit. Your instructors will guide you through a series of steps to help you feel at ease as you exit your boat. This is a relaxed, no pressure way to learn this important safety skill.
After a lunch break on-site, we'll learn the basic strokes you need to build a strong foundation for kayaking. We’ll cover going forward, stopping and turning, then we'll jump right into learning a t-rescue, an essential skill in kayaking.
We'll spend the whole day off-site at Europe Lake. Please pre-order a box lunch when you get to the symposium or plan to pack a lunch - we will not return to the symposium site for our lunch break.

Open Water Adventure All sea kayaking begins with fundamental skills such as those taught at this symposium. We don't use different skills as we improve as paddlers, we refine the fundamentals and are able to paddle effectively in more challenging conditions as we become more advanced paddlers. Mastery of paddling techniques in real-world conditions is what separates advanced paddlers from beginners.
In this instructional journey, we'll "up" the intensity by heading out into an open water environment where practice in context becomes the key to becomming a better sea kayaker. During this 3-hour class, you'll maintain a 4-mile per hour pace as you learn to use your skills within the environment. Depending on conditions that may mean experience with wind and chop, following seas, weather cocking, and certainly, practice of your kayak roll and forward stroke.
This class will focus on improving already existing skills by using the environment to create teachable moments.

A roll is not needed but we do require the completion of Boat Control 1 and 2, solid rescue skills and a desire for new adventures.

A Perfect Fit : Outfitting Your Boat The key to boat control is a solid connection between the paddler and the kayak. There is a big the difference between merely sitting in the cockpit and wearing your boat. The best way to get this perfect fit is to outfit your kayak yourself.
In this hands-on workshop you’ll learn how to customize your kayak for precise fit. We’ll select one participant’s boat to work on together and learn how to measure, cut and attach foam padding at key locations. You’ll leave with the knowledge to custom fit your own boat for increased performance.
Participants may have the opportunity to work on their personal boats if time permits. Materials will be available for an additional fee.
