What classes can I take?

On Water Classes—limit one class per person
The classes we offer at Water Divas are very short versions of the classes we regularly offer at Rutabaga Outdoor Programs. Take the time to “test paddle” our sampler of classes during Water Divas and then sign up for one of our full-length classes. We have multiple date and time options, so pick one that works for you! Many of our classes have a women specific option.

Recreational Kayaking
Recreational kayaks are easy to paddle, hard to tip, and fit any body shape or type–they’re built so anyone can experience kayaking. Join us on the water so you can discover why paddling recreational kayaks is so popular and so much fun!

Sea Kayaking
If you dream of paddling adventures on larger bodies of water, close to home or around the world, then sea kayaking is for you! Learn a few basics of sea kayaking and find out how much fun it is to paddle these narrower, longer, and faster kayaks.

Solo Canoeing
Solo canoes are small, maneuverable and easy for women to paddle. Whatever your previous canoe experience, come learn a few strokes in a solo canoe and see how freeing it can be to paddle your own boat.

Tandem Canoeing
Many of us have had some canoeing experience, but knowing a few simple strokes can help ensure a relaxed evening paddle on the lake. Come learn a few basics and discover how easy it can be to paddle together.

On Land Clinics—attend as many as you want!

Dressing for Paddling
Discover what clothing and footwear works best for paddling during the warm season ahead. Learn how to layer for cool spring days and how to protect yourself from the sun and bugs of summer.

Launching & Landing
Most paddling injuries occur as people get in or out of their boats. We’ll demonstrate safe and effective methods of shoreline and dock launches and landings, then you’ll have time to practice and find what works best for you.

Transporting Your Boat
For many of us, the biggest challenge to getting on the water is how to get the boat from home to the water. Let us show you some tricks to make moving your boat a smooth and easy process. The session will cover transporting your boat to and from your car, options for transporting canoes and kayaks, and tie-downs to keep your boat safely on your car.

Kayak Fishing
Have you always wanted to catch the big one? Come learn the secrets of fishing from a kayak. We will discuss the gear you need, where to go, and how to do it all from a kayak. Even if you aren’t interested in catching the big one, but are simply curious about fishing, this session is for you!

Yoga for Paddlers
Get your body and mind ready for paddling! Yoga is an excellent way to increase your flexibility, balance, and strength. Come learn a few basic yoga moves that will help you increase your stamina and comfort on the water and back on land.

Backyard Favorites – Local Trips
Some of the best paddling in the country is right here in our own backyard. Discover some of our favorite local waterways as you learn how to use popular guidebooks and maps. You’ll find new places to launch your boat and a new appreciation for the beauty of southern Wisconsin’s rivers and lakes.

Efficient Kayak Strokes
Make every stroke count. Learning how to get maximum efficiency from your stroke will help you use your body to its best ability and cover the miles with ease. If you’ve heard the phrase “torso rotation” but aren’t sure what that means, this is the clinic to find out.

Efficient Canoe strokes
Paddling efficiently can be beneficial in a number of ways—conserves energy, helps you go faster, and, above all, makes for a more enjoyable experience. We will discuss proper canoe paddling technique and do some on land practice. Torso rotation isn’t just for kayaks anymore!

Camping tips
For some of us, camping in the woods can be a little intimidating. Come learn how to turn your camping trip into the trip of a lifetime. We will cover Leave No Trace practices, the Go Girl, water filtration, and much more.

Map and Compass
An important skill for anyone to understand—where do I want to go and how do I get there? Become more familiar with the compass, learn to read a map, and be able to put the two together! It will take the guesswork out of your next adventure.

Being Safe on the Water
It’s always a good thing to be prepared when you are heading out for a paddle, whether it is for a couple hours or a couple of days. We will discuss trip decision-making, paddling safety concerns—i.e., weather, boat limitations—and some basic everyday safety gear. These are helpful things you can take with you everywhere. Safe paddling is fun paddling!

COOKING! This is always a Water Divas favorite—learning how to cook scrumptious meals for the trail. We will be featuring Cache Lake food, which is made in Minnesota. We’ll be cooking all day long, so stop by when you have a moment and see what you can make in your outdoor kitchen! We will have tips and tasters!

Lunch time Demonstrations
There is so much to learn when it comes to paddling that we can’t cover it all in one day. Through our lunch time demonstrations, we have the opportunity to show you what else is available to you in the paddling world and inform you of the additional classes we have to offer. Everything you see during our demonstrations are classes you can take with us at Rutabaga Outdoor Programs. Here is what you can look forward to during the lunch demonstrations:
· Kayak rolling—we offer classes throughout the winter (in a pool!) and outside during the summer in a clean lake.
· Stand Up Paddleboard—check out the newest thing in the paddling world! We are offering classes throughout the summer in this exciting new sport.
· Canoe maneuvers—we offer a number of canoe classes where you can learn how to move your canoe with ease.
