August 21, 2010 - 10:30am-4:00pm - At Rutabaga in Monona, WI
We invite anyone and everyone who is curious about canoeing or is a canoe enthusiast to come and join us for a relaxed, no pressure day of paddling, learning and fun. We will paddle rain or shine.
Join us for the entire day or take in just the portions that interest you.
SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES
On-Water Classes- from 11am-1pm & 2pm-4pm
| · | Solo Canoeing - a great chance to try out what it feels like to "paddle your own canoe." |
| · | Tandem Canoeing - try out paddling a tandem for the first time, or pick up a few tips to make your paddling more efficient (and fun!) |
| · | Canadian Style Canoeing - a smooth and beautiful style of paddling that maximizes efficiency, whether solo or tandem. |
| · | Racing Strokes for Canoeists - learn how to really move your canoe, using a bent-shaft paddle and a hit-and-switch style. |
| · | Family Canoeing - If you've wanted to take your kids canoeing but need some tricks and tips, this is your clinic. |
Lunch Demonstrations - from 1-2pm
| · | Skid Plates - learn how to install skid plates to protect your canoe's bow and stern from wear. |
| · | Canoe Poling - Canoe poling is a rare skill but it still has applications. See where it might benefit you. |
| · | Canoe Rescues Demonstration - If you've swamped a canoe far from shore, you can get back in. See how our instructors do it. |
| · | Whitewater Maneuvers Demonstration - Usually we think of whitewater as kayak territory. It's not; you'll see why. |
| · | Advanced Boat Control Demonstration - Forget what you think canoes can do. This sort of boat control is both beautiful and functional. |
On-Land Clinics: -from 11am-1pm & 2pm-4pm
| · | Tarps and Shelters - learn how to rig a tarp so you can stay comfortable (i.e. dry and not sunburned) in any situation. |
| · | Using a Map and Compass - basic navigation doesn't require a GPS. And a compass never runs out of batteries. Navigation skills are always useful! |
| · | Packing for the BWCA - if you want to venture into the boreal forest, let a long-time veteran of the Boundary Waters give you tips and tricks on packing. |
| · | Portaging Techniques - getting your canoe from place to place on land is just as important as paddling it. Learn how to portage safely and comfortably, being nice to your back. |
| · | Backyard Favorites - in addition to our favorite destinations all over the globe, find out where we paddle locally. |
| · | Reading the River - learn how to read river features so you can pick your correct path. |
On-Going Demos: -from 11am-4pm
| · | Camp Cooking Workshop - Learn about stoves and cooking gear options, and how to make choices that will keep your stomach happy. Added bonus - learn great outdoor coffee-making techniques (so important on a camping trip!) Includes a demo on keeping water fit for drinking. |
