Staff Reviews - Bell Canoe Works Merlin II, (KevLight)
An extremely versatile solo that excells in most paddling situations.

The Merlin 2 is one of my favorite boats. This boat is super lite, tracks great, great for trips (roomy), it's not very tippy, and best of all it's just fun to paddle. I used this boat on a 2 day Wisconsin River trip and was very pleased with it's performance. Love this boat!!

I demoed this boat for a weekend on the Root River near Lanesboro, MN. It was plenty manueverable in the moving riffles, but it still had a lot of speed when the water slows to a drag in the last few miles just above of the dam.

What I really enjoy about this boat is its secondary stability. As with all the Bell boats, once you reassure yourself in the fact that it leans over as far as it does with out going all the way over, you can get the gunwale really close the the water and really spin the boat.

Having been the first canoe that I have taken out solo, the Merlin II will hold a very special place in my heart. It is stable enough not to be too scary for a novice, but agile enough to move easily through the water. The best thing about this boat is that it is only 31 pounds – this boat is incredibly easy to put on top of the car and even easier to carry to the put-in. Being 15 feet long, there is plenty of room for gear and deep enough that you won’t sink if you pack it up with gear. It is exceptionally maneuverable for paddling on smaller rivers but still tracks well once you get to a lake or open water. Well, maybe someday, when I win the lottery, I will be able to buy this boat for myself and not feel too guilty.

The Merlin II is a close cousin of the old Curtis Nomad (R.I.P.) which was one of my favorite solo canoes of all time. The Merlin, like the Nomad, excels at nothing but is good at everything. If you can only afford one solo canoe, a Merlin would be my choice.
