Berlin grew up in Washington state climbing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing and exploring natural areas. He has taken three paddling trips to Alaska including Misty Fjords in SE Alaska. Glacier Bay National Park and the Noatak River in Gates of the Artic National Park. In his late 70's he still does all the outdoor activities, including climbing, that he did as a young adult. In 2023 he and friends took two trips down the Rio Grande River in Texas exploring most of the wild and scenic protected parts of the river. He lives in Fargo, ND, and is retired from North Dakota State University.

Big canyons, whitewater, and nasty Carrizo cane are all part of the canoeing adventure on 235 miles of the Rio Grande River between the United States and Mexico. It is wild and scenic country through the Chihuahuan Desert of the southwestern USA.
