2010 Presentations

The Trans-Amazon Expediton: 3,000 miles across South America
Dave Freeman will share stories, videos and photos from the banks of the Amazon River. In 2008 Dave and five other teammates completed the Trans-Amazon Expedition, a 3,000 mile journey by bicycle and canoe across South America. The expedition consisted of three, six-week long phases over the course of two and a half years. For a taste of the experience, imagine paddling from dawn to dusk every day, fishing for piranha, freeing an anaconda from a fisherman's net, camping in remote river communities, spotting the deadly wandering spider, and floating alongside pink river dolphins. Dave will also provide insight into planning and executing an international paddling expedition, and will provide information and contacts for arranging a one to three week canoe trip in the Peruvian Amazon.

Become a Virtual Explorer
On Earth Day 2010, Dave Freeman and Amy Voytilla will begin a 3 year, 12,000 mile journey by canoe, kayak, and dogsled to educate elementary and middle school students about North America's waterways and the importance of protecting the natural world. This program will give educators and parents the basic tools they need to engage their students in this educational journey and bring the thrill and excitement of paddling and exploration into your classroom or home. You will learn how you can use moderated chats, online polls, email, and other interactive technology to communicate with the expedition team as they paddle from Seattle to the Arctic Ocean and then work their way from the Arctic Ocean to the Florida Keys over the next 3 school years. You will also learn about the Wilderness Classroom's standards aligned lessons and activities, and explore techniques for incorporating the expedition into subjects your student's are currently studying. Dave will also explain how college students and adventurous adults will have the opportunity to join the expedition team for a week or two in the field.
