Your First Expedition

So all those magazines with great articles about faraway places have you inspired. You just watched a presentation and walk out wishing you could have that experience. But then reality sets in. You have a family, a job and myriad responsibilities. You’re not an athlete. You’re not rich. Suddenly it starts seeming a little less real. Of course taking that first trip can seem daunting, but it is possible. Derrick shares his experiences putting together his 2007 expedition to Puerto Rico.

Derrick Mayoleth has been sea kayaking since 2002 and is an ACA certified Coach & BCU 4* Paddler. He is an instructor with Rutabaga in Madison, Wisconsin. Derrick has paddled on both coasts of the US, Lake Superior & Lake Michigan. (and many little lakes in between) In 2007 he was lucky enough to spend some time paddling in Wales & along with his partner, was the first to circumnavigate the Island of Puerto Rico by sea kayak.
