Boat Requirements & Rentals

Boat Requirements
If you have your own boat, that’s great. Please bring it along and learn in it. We encourage you to use your own boat and gear, if possible. Learning in your own boat helps you feel more comfortable going out and practicing on your own after the symposium.

We welcome all sea kayaks and some recreational kayaks.

•Recreational kayaks (boats of 13.5’ -15’ in length) with spray skirts, static deck lines, sealed bulkheads and/or 2 floatation bags are welcome in Beginner and Basic classes and on Introductory and Beginner level tours.

•Skills Challenge classes and Intermediate and Advanced level tours require sea kayaks of 15’ or longer properly equipped with spray skirts, floatation, and static deck lines. We want to make sure that on these longer tours in potentially rough conditions you are able to comfortably and safely keep up with the group.

Boat Package Rentals
If you don't have a boat, that's just fine. We still want you to learn in a safe and seaworthy craft and can provide you with a boat, PFD, spray skirt, and paddle to get you out on the water comfortably and safely for the weekend.

Again for the 2010 symposium, there will be a rental fee to use a supplied boat package.

Full Symposium Weekend
Full Package (boat, skirt, paddle, PFD) - $100.00
Boat & Skirt only - $80.00

Onr Day Only
Full Package (boat, skirt, paddle, PFD) - $70.00
Boat & Skirt only - $50.00

One day Gear rental available only with one day registration.
Weekend Gear rental available only with two or three day registration.

There is no charge for a youth rental. Any rental package for a participant under 16 years old is free.

If you are bringing your own boat that is 13.5’ – 15’ in length and are interested in taking part in any of the Intermediate or Advanced level tours, please understand that you will need a longer boat for those specific activities.

For example, if you bring your own 14.5' recreational kayak and want to go on the Garrett Bay to Ellison Bay Tour (Intermediate level), you will need to sign up for a boat to rent. You can rent the boat & skirt only, since you will have your own PFD and paddle. You would need to rent the boat for the entire length of your symposium stay; you cannot rent a boat for only the tour.

Please note that PFDs are required to be worn any time you're in a boat on the water, including classes, tours, and demos.
