The Wisconsin River being so close is a common destination of mine. When camping on a sand bar, sand has the tendency to infiltrate everything. That is unless you are packing in large barrels. They stay clean and dry while on the sand, but also while in the bottom of a boat during the heaviest of rainstorms. While a barrel may weigh more than a pack, it doesn't soak up water like fabric so probably doesn't weigh any more. Plus the design offers a nice seat and I don't have to worry about keeping it under my rainfly at night to keep dry. I just set it next to the tent and shake the dew off in the morning.
I lube the hinges on my barrels once a season with a lithium grease to keep everything operating smoothly but otherwise I haven't had to do any maintenance on mine through the years of hard use.
