Three Layer Polyethylene
Weight: 56lbs |
Most plastic kayaks are rotationally-molded from a class of plastics called polyethylene. Each class has its own characteristics, Old Town constructs canoes and kayaks in two different methods: the single layer method, which is the more common way to mold boats, and the triple layer method, which stacks an outside layer, a middle layer that has a foaming agent in it for floatation, and a thin inside layer to seal it up. Three layer hulls are stiffer, offer built in flotation, and have a cool aesthetic. They are a bit heavier, but they're super durable. Many triple layer hulls are still around after thirty years. |
