Aquatic invasive species (AIS) impact everyone who recreates on the water. AIS can hitch rides on all types of water gear from motorboaters to kayaks and rafts, and even fishing equipment like boots and nets. That's why you should always be Clean, Drain, Dry between uses of any water sport gear.
Clean - remove any visible mud or debris. No chemical necessary, just use water!
Drain - drain all standing water from your watercraft. Invasive species can survive with the tiniest amount of water, so be sure to get it all.
Dry - Leave your gear outside to dry. Once it is dry to the touch, it is much less likely for invasive species to be present.
Following these simple practices each and every time you exit the water will help to protect the waters you love from harmful AIS.
Invasive Species Action Network also wants to remind boaters to always stop at watercraft inspection stations if and when they are encountered. These inspections ensure that your watercraft is not spreading invasive species and should only take a few moments of your time, especially if you are already Clean, Drain, Dry!
