The Madison LakeWay is a visionary plan to transform 1.7 miles of lakeshore into a more welcoming, accessible, and ecologically resilient waterfront that better connects paddlers, cyclists, walkers, and neighbors to the lake we all love. Shaped by decades of public input and formally adopted by the Madison Common Council in 2024, the project prioritizes improved lake access, restored shoreline habitat, safer connections around Lake Monona, and spaces that invite people to pause, launch, explore, and gather. Phase 1, soon underway, focuses on detailed design along the John Nolen Drive corridor, laying the groundwork for future construction and long-term improvements that will enhance paddling access, water quality, and the overall lake experience. A key feature of the LakeWay is the StoryWalk, which will connect people to the layered cultural, ecological, and Indigenous histories of this shoreline-while inviting today's lake users to help write new stories of stewardship, recreation, and belonging.
