EastPole Paddles produces traditional wooden paddles based on designs that originated thousands of years ago. These paddles were first developed by Inuit people, who used kayaks for seal hunting, fishing, and transportation across Arctic waters. For them, the paddle was not just a tool, but an essential part of everyday life and survival.

Traditional Inuit paddles were shaped to be efficient, quiet, and reliable. Their long, narrow blades allowed smooth movement through the water, helping hunters approach animals without noise and travel long distances with less effort. Originally, these paddles were carved from driftwood or other available solid wood, often from dense heartwood, chosen for its strength and durability.

EastPole Paddles follows these same traditional principles. Our paddles are handcrafted from Western red cedar, a lightweight yet strong wood that provides excellent performance on the water. The shape, balance, and proportions of the paddle remain true to the original Inuit designs that have proven their value over centuries.

While the paddle itself stays traditional, certain materials have been adapted for durability. Historically, paddle tips were reinforced with whale bone to protect them from ice and rocks. EastPole Paddles uses a strong modern polymer for this purpose. This material offers reliable protection against impacts while visually resembling traditional whale bone, maintaining the authentic appearance of the paddle.

EastPole Paddles represents respect for ancient knowledge and craftsmanship. By preserving traditional forms and combining them with carefully chosen materials, these paddles keep a timeless design alive for today's paddlers who value history, function, and tradition.
