Following a tragic kayak fatality on Lake Michigan in 2016, four American Canoe Association Level 4 Coastal Kayak Instructors (Jeff Adler, John Browning, Sherri Mertz, and Dick Silberman) met to discuss ways in which to improve kayak safety education for paddlers on the Great Lakes. With help from other ACA instructors and committed individuals in the paddlesports industry, a website, PaddleSafely.com, and a Facebook page were launched. Jeff, John, Sherri, and Dick are all very active instructors and can be found doing several individual and group presentations at Canoecopia. John and Sherri are certified in several other paddling disciplines, and John is an Instructor Trainer Educator and Chairperson for the Coastal Kayak Committee for the ACA. For more information on the PaddleSafely campaign, please visit the American Canoe Association booth at Canoecopia.

Presentations

 Paddling Safety for Recreational Kayakers
Loon - upstairs Fri 4:30pm-5:15pm
Sylvania - main floor Sat 3:30pm-4:15pm

Everyone wants to return safely from every kayak trip, but sometimes what we don't know can put us at serious risk. A panel of experienced kayak instructors with over 75 years of combined paddling experience will discuss safe paddling practices for recreational kayaking. All paddlers, but especially novice kayakers, are invited to come with any and all questions.

 Rec Kayak Rescue Reality
Pool - Clarion Hotel Sat 2:00pm-2:20pm

Your very stable recreational kayak has just capsized unexpectedly. What do you do now? See a demonstration of what happens when recreational kayaks capsize and what your realistic options are when it happens. Smart paddlers know that we are all just "between swims." This is a great opportunity to plan ahead and make sure all your kayak trips this summer are safe ones. Since pool demonstrations are only 20 minutes, you are invited to attend the PaddleSafely presentations on "Paddling Safety for Recreational Kayakers" which will allow more time for questions and discussion on topics arising from this pool demo.
