  Dan York & Dick Steinle

Dan York is a lifetime paddler, beginning when he learned canoeing basics with the Boy Scouts. In college he learned whitewater kayaking and has been an avid river runner ever since. While he enjoys all types of paddling, his favorite trips are multi-day whitewater runs on wild rivers of the West. Closer to home Dan enjoys kayaking on Wisconsin's many fine whitewater runs as well as flatwater canoeing with family and friends. He has been an active leader and instructor over his long paddling career. Lately Dan's paddling passion has turned to sea kayaking with a return expedition planned in 2020 to the Lofoten Islands in far northern Norway.

Dick Steinle has been paddling since the early 70's. He took a job working for a resort on the edge of the BWCA the summer of 1980 and his passion blossomed from there. He took many return trips to the BWCA and ran rivers around the Midwest. In 1996 he took a sea kayak class with the intent to grow with style of paddling. That was the spark that moved him into teaching canoe and kayak classes. He has taken his sea kayak to both the east & west coast, as well as many trips to Lake Superior. He's also been known to get a water skier up for short distances. He says "teaching is very rewarding when you see the smile coming from your students when they get that new paddle stoke."

Presentations

Canoe Control 101: Basic Tandem Strokes
Pool - Clarion Hotel Sat 12:30pm-12:50pm
Pool - Clarion Hotel Sun 1:00pm-1:20pm

Canoes are paddling adventure multi-tools, suitable for a wide range of trips, from exploring small ponds to extended wilderness expeditions. Knowing the small set of basic canoeing strokes will greatly increase your control and efficiency whenever you're on the water. Dan and Dick will demonstrate the essential strokes for moving your canoe where you want it to go - in a straight line, turning, or sideways. If your canoe seems to have a mind of its own, this session is for you!
