 No Voyageurs on the Ottertooth
(in-person only)   Sylvania - main floor Sat 10:30am-11:15am
In 1784 Edward Umfreville (EU) struggled to portage and paddle his way up Ottertooth Creek to find a new route to Lake Winnipeg. The North West Company had hired Umfreville to bypass the traditional trade route across what is now the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The Company was afraid that the American's might start charging a tax to cross the Grand Portage after the Treaty of Paris of 1783. Working with Ontario Nature, the Friends of Wabakimi Park are trying to extend protection to segments of EU's route not protected by Obango/Ottertooth Provincial Park. Come see why the rugged Ottertooth drainage did not become the new route of the voyageurs!
