When Nick was 3, his older brother got to paddle a homemade kayak called "Fang" on Cape Cod, but Nick was not allowed. Even 57 years later, he still remembers that rejection. At 10, his father built a kayak, but again, his brother got first use. Determined to change things, Nick designed his own sea kayak after college. For over 40 years, he has designed and built high-performance kayaks and small boats for himself and others. He's published two books on boat building, and his company, Guillemot Kayaks, has designs built worldwide, known for their performance and beauty. One of his kayaks is in the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. Nick builds boats out of a love for paddling and being on the water, paddling year-round along New England's coast. He also teaches boat building and kayaking, inspiring others to get on the water. While he still feels a twinge about never paddling Fang, he finds relief in paddling his own creations. |
