Terry is a three-time Olympian who has been racing canoes and kayaks every year since he was 12. He's still holds the top American finish ever in the K-2 500m with a silver medal at the worlds and the copper medal (4th) at the Olympics. What keeps him excited about racing into his 60's is the joy of being on the water and figuring out ever more efficient technique. >br />
As he has raced flatwater sprint, outrigger canoe, whitewater kayak, stand up paddleboard and marathon canoe and spent years hanging out with the touring and tripping folks at Swift Canoe, he sees the common traits of good technique across all paddling disciplines.

 Better Paddling Technique Made Easy
Atrium - upstairs Fri 4:30pm-5:15pm

Canoe and kayak paddling is tough, because we all learn by being thrown out on the water (scary) holding this foreign object (a paddle) that is our lifeline to control a boat that is totally new for us - so of course we learn to use our smallest control muscles. Then, this early bad habit is cemented through the repetitive nature of paddling. The trick to improvement is first understanding what the basics of good technique are and what they can do for you. It's not about becoming some big-time racer - it's about learning better control and gaining easy strength through proper mechanics that can make paddling even more fun. You'll walk away from a talk with Terry excited to try out at least a couple of new tricks that will make you feel stronger and safer in your favorite canoe or kayak.
