Abby learned to canoe through various summer camps, but was truly bitten by the paddling bug in 2022 when she went on a five day canoe trip in the BWCA with her girl scout troop. Abby has since completed two seasons as a professional canoe guide and WEMT for both Northern Lakes Canoe Base and Northern Tier High Adventure.
In the summer of 2025, Abby paddled 1,381 miles over 80 days as part of the Hudson Bay Girls' journey from Lake Superior to the Arctic Ocean. The Hudson Bay Girls were the first all-female crew to publicly paddle the entire route, starting at Grand Portage and ending at York Factory.

The group was the first all-female crew to publicly document their travels from Grand Portage to York Factory. Helena KarlstromAs a lifelong Girl Scout, Helena has always felt a special connection to the outdoors. Helena’s outdoor passion continued in college when she became a leader at Ohio University’s outdoor program, Outdoor Pursuits. Her favorite backcountry activities include backpacking, climbing, canoeing, fly fishing and trail running. In the summer of 2025, she embarked on an expedition paddling and portaging over 1,381 miles from Grand Portage, MN to York Factory, MB, as a part of the Hudson Bay Girls. The HBG are the first all-women’s crew to complete this journey while also raising awareness for Save the Boundary Waters and women in paddlesports.

In the summer of 2025, the Hudson Bay Girls-a team of four college-aged women-completed an 80-day, 1,381-mile canoe expedition from Lake Superior to Hudson Bay. They are the first all-female crew to publicly document their paddle along the historic fur trade route from Grand Portage to York Factory. Join them to hear stories from the trail, learn what it takes to plan a multi-month wilderness expedition, and explore how their journey connects adventure, environmental stewardship, and empowerment in the outdoors.
