  Stephen Simpson

Steve was born in Aurora Illinois in 1956 and grew up in the NW Suburbs of Chicago. In 1975, after completing High School and working for a year in a plastic factory, he set out on the journey described in this presentation. After paddling Lakes Michigan and Superior in 1975 and the Voyageurs Highway in 1976, he took a summer off to work for Ralph Frese at the Chicagoland Canoe Base before completing a final summer of travel from Ft McMurray, Alberta to the mouth of the Yukon River in 1978. br />
The experience of paddling through the wilderness, particularly the Canadian Shield and the north shore of Lake Superior, filled him with a deep curiosity about the Earth and he decided to go to college. Beginning with some classes at Oakton Community College in Skokie, Illinois, he eventually earned a B.A. and M.S. in Geology from the University of Montana in Missoula.

After teaching at Highland Community College in Freeport for over 30 years, Steve retired in 2018 and currently lives on the banks of the Wisconsin River.

This presentation describes Steve's experiences as he paddled a Klepper Kayak 3000 miles through lakes Michigan and Superior and along the network of rivers, lakes, and portages commonly called the "Voyageurs Highway" in Canada. He was 19 when he set out from Evanston, Illinois in 1975, socially inept, disillusioned with civilization, and convinced he wanted to become a hermit. When asked about future plans by a High School Guidance Counsellor, he described his life goal as "Finding a remote valley in Canada, building a log cabin, and watching civilization deteriorate from a safe distance." But after two years in the wilderness he returned to civilization as a reasonably well-adjusted young man ready to embark on the new adventure of a college education. In his travels he experienced fear and triumph, deep depression and great joy, profound loneliness and the growth of true friendship. It was the defining experience of his life.
