Steve was born in Aurora Illinois in 1956 and grew up in the NW Suburbs of Chicago. In 1975, after completing High School and working for a year in a plastic factory, he set out on the journey described in this presentation. After paddling Lakes Michigan and Superior in 1975 and the Voyageurs Highway in 1976, he took a summer off to work for Ralph Frese at the Chicagoland Canoe Base before completing a final summer of travel from Ft McMurray, Alberta to the mouth of the Yukon River in 1978.
br /> The experience of paddling through the wilderness, particularly the Canadian Shield and the north shore of Lake Superior, filled him with a deep curiosity about the Earth and he decided to go to college. Beginning with some classes at Oakton Community College in Skokie, Illinois, he eventually earned a B.A. and M.S. in Geology from the University of Montana in Missoula. After teaching at Highland Community College in Freeport for over 30 years, Steve retired in 2018 and currently lives on the banks of the Wisconsin River. |
